Maybe it’s because I’m a Gemini, but duality has always appealed to me. Take this picture, composed of photo-based images and paint over clear plexiglass, one of my largest pieces at 57 x 43 inches. I call it Falling. The reproduction above shows how it looks by day.

And here is a detail of the same picture at night, with backlighting. At 10 am, light falls on it; at 10 pm, light shines through it. I can’t say I prefer one to the other. They’re just different. Duality is an essential part of the aesthetic.

The textures vary, too, as in this daylight detail of a face and an overlapping leg, made with paint, scratching, and collage. I wanted the surface to be as alive and varied as the subject.

Here is another detail, seen at night. The large, falling nude goes dark, while the kissing couple behind him seems to light up.

Motifs repeat over and over again, each time in a different guise. Slow down. Take a look. You may even find an eye looking back at you.

This piece was recently published in a small book on the theme of wildness, broadly interpreted from a gay and lesbian perspective, with texts by Duane Michals, Katherine Hubbard, Allen Frame, Nandita Raman, and Drew Sawyer. It features the work of eleven photographers, including yours truly (pages 29-31). A limited number of copies is still available.
